When A eventually encouraged her to start on her own path in 1997, Breut’s unique voice quickly became the ideal ambassador for this blossoming French scene among foreign audiences. Artists wrote for her, from Dominique A to Philippe Katerine and Yann Tiersen, to name but the most famous. Bands from Herman Düne to Calexico recorded and toured with her, and a figure as influential as Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) even wrote a “Letter to Françoiz.” Dominique A once said: “Everybody loves Françoiz”, and he wasn’t just talking about musicians, but about audiences everywhere. This is a voice that’s hard to resist. With her fourth album À L’Aveuglette, Françoiz Breut is breaking new ground: for the first time, she wrote all her own lyrics. Music video: 2009 – “Nébuleux Bonhomme” http://vimeo.com/4414056 MARIANNE DISSARD French-born, Tucson-based chanteuse Marianne Dissard, listed as one of “50 French people making their mark on the USA” by France-Amérique Magazine, has toured extensively the world over with her first album, the Joey Burns-produced L’Entredeux (“Top Ten French albums of the Decade” on various blogs, “Coup de Coeur” from French Académie Charles Cros for its lyrics). Between Chanson and Americana, her music draws inspiration and strength from her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, where she has collaborated with Calexico, Howe Gelb, Naïm Amor, Sergio Mendoza, Brian Lopez, Salvador Duran and many others. Marianne showcased at SXSW 2010, where she blogged about the festival for the Huffington Post, and recently released her intermediary album, Paris One Takes (8/10 stars Blurt, 4/5 stars Venus, “Definitely one of our favorite albums of 2010″ Lucid Culture), as a free download, available at www.mariannedissard.com. Her second studio album, L’Abandon, sung in French, English, Spanish and Italian, will be released in January 2011 with its companion DVD, a film informed by Andy Warhol’s western escapade, “Lonesome Cowboys”. Marianne is also a poet, performance artist and filmmaker, and her work with choreographer Ami Garmon showcased at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and she sang at MOMA in NYC. WHAT IS CHANSON, WHAT IS NOUVELLE CHANSON? From a centuries-long tradition in French vocal music of solo songs – as opposed to opera, from the troubadours to chanson de salon (19th century) and chanson réaliste (1880’s to WWII) – Chanson is a musical style then mainly performed by women (Edith Piaf, Fréhel, Damia), to the mid-20th century ‘classic greats” (Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Georges Brassens, Léo Ferré). “Nouvelle Chanson” is a recently-coined term, encompassing artists that draw from the chanson tradition, whether in France or abroad (Emilie Simon, Camille, Dominique A., Keren Ann), with an ear for international influences (rock, electronica, latin) and a continued emphasis on crafted lyrics and dramatic expressiveness. |
