Summer 2024 was lousy. Wettest summer on record in Scotland. No matter, rain or shine, for the love of music, some quick cash or both, Glasgow’s street musicians made Glasgow pause. Glasgow sing along and wiggle. Made Glasgow... Glasgow.
I photographed daily for three weeks in the city centre between Queen Street and Central stations, up and down Buchanan, Argyle, and Sauchiehall streets. Stages all, where the camaraderie is real, the musicianship at times stupendous. A performer myself, I was humbled. On these streets, you’re at the mercy of not just the weather.
Kids, and their doting ‘mumagers’. Teens, and their stickered dreams. Uni students, busking for rent. Grown-ups, on year-round hustles, proselytic rants, part-time passion. Hailing from Port Dundas, Ayr, or Airdrie, from Nigeria or Ukraine... in this wee book, a snapshot, just a few Glasgow buskers out of many, many more out there...
