Summer 2024 was lousy. Wettest summer on record in Scotland. No matter, rain or shine, for the love of music, some quick cash or both, Glasgow’s street musicians made Glasgow pause. Glasgow sing along and wiggle. Made Glasgow... Glasgow.
I photographed daily for three weeks in the city centre between Queen Street and Central stations, up and down Buchanan, Argyle, and Sauchiehall streets. Stages all, where the camaraderie is real, the musicianship at times stupendous. A performer myself, I was humbled. On these streets, you’re at the mercy of not just the weather.
Kids, and their doting ‘mumagers’. Teens, and their stickered dreams. Uni students, busking for rent. Grown-ups, on year-round hustles, proselytic rants, part-time passion. Hailing from Port Dundas, Ayr, or Airdrie, from Nigeria or Ukraine... in this wee book, a snapshot, just a few Glasgow buskers out of many, many more out there...
THANKS to Michael McCann for the inspiration, Angie Catlin, Raphael Mann, and Beatrix Wood for the suggestions, Dyllane (Buskers of Glasgow), and for their patience, the buskers (and their mums...), including Muyiwe, Rory McKie, Dave Burns, Ivy Guyo, Io Palej, Justin, Evie McColgan, Kayden Simonon, Ethan McCarther, James Simpson, Gavin Clinton, Melissa Nic Asgaill, Vladimir Prezlyata, Cailyn, Cherry Bomb, The Melvins, Rosie Mae Tiffoney, Sophie Gibson, Joel Rushton, and Rach Songbird, and those who didn't make the final cut.
MARIANNE Dissard is a Franco-American singer, performer, author, and visual artist. Her first urban documentary series, On A Good Day You Can See France (2021), was made during winter lockdowns in her then-hometown of Ramsgate in Kent. Lights Out, Knightsbridge (2022), made in Central London, features in her stage production Souvenir of England. Ongoing series No-Road Trip USA documents her Amtrak journeys across the continent. Prints, books, LPs, CDs, and cassettes can be purchased from her website. Marianne is based in Coatbridge, Scotland, for now.
